This condition is a skin disease caused by a microscopic parasitic mite. Demodectic mites are found in small numbers in the hair follicles of normal dogs. In dogs with nemodicosis, however, these mites reproduce, and large numbers inhabit the skin and hair follicles. Dogs may acquire mites from their mother 2-3 days after birth.

Miniature Pinschers, like many other smooth-coated breeds (i.e. Italian Greyhounds, DobermansPinschers, Boxers, etc.) because of their single-layer thinner coat have a predisposition to noticeable outbreaks of "Demodectic (Red) Mange" mites in times of stress. These mites occur naturally on most mammals, humans generally have these microscopic mites in our hairline, eyebrows, eye lashes, etc. Our normal immune system keeps the mange mites in check. Outbreaks of over activity in these mites usually happens during periods of stress in a puppy’s life; teething, inoculations, change of owner/home, first season (heat), ear cropping, spay/neutering or any other event occurring under the age of a year which stresses the dog’s immune system.

This is a temporary situation, it occurs in many if not all Miniature Pinschers in varying degrees, it is neither life-threatening nor permanent, and their coat almost always recovers within 8-10 weeks with treatment. The outbreak is not contagious; we already have these mites living on our skin. Contact your veterinarian for treatment and reduce the puppy’s stress as much as possible.

K & D Miniature Pinschers guarantees their puppies health under standard conditions. All bloodlines can contract this condition, therefore we do not guarantee against Demadectic Mange (Localized or Generalized) especially with dilute factor puppies.

K & D Miniature Pinschers can not guarantee the coat on the puppy or guarantee it to become a breeder and produce puppies.

Coat conditions vary with different colors. The chocolates sometimes loose small portions of the coat and then re-grow it. Some blues and fawns have a genetic problem called alopecia in which their coat will come out and not return, leaving the dog bald. Sometimes just simple nutrition will cause a poor coat. Miniature Pinschers do have dry skin and when bathed, should have only dog shampoo recommended from your veterinarian should be used on them. K & D Miniature Pinschers can not guarantee the coat on the puppy or guarantee it to become a breeder and produce puppies. Please read our page on Alopecia.
